Jacob’s father is Will— . iam, his grandfather is Daniel, great grand father is Peter and great, great grandfather is Rudolph. Pictured on the left are Howard, Laura, Clifford, Harold, Geraldine, and Stan ley who are children of Jacob B Noffsinger A picture of the five Nofsker brothers was published in th September issue of the Nafz— ger Heritage News. According to information on a picture I have, the names and position are as follows: cob EmanueD ____________ Flora Allen, daughter of William Nofsker sent the picture to Mother. She had a lot of infor mation on the Nofsker family. For example, she had a letter from her father written while he was in the Army. It was written,I believe,From Camp Bell Hospital, Washington, D. C. in 1864 during the Civil War.He had been wounded in the left hand during the battle of Cold Harbor and was to undergo surgery for the removal of a finger, and would then receive a furlough. I have the information of Jacob Emanuel Nof s— ker, my grandfather, about finished and will send it to you along with the chart and key. I hope to find the information on Sarah Ann S Nofsker Hoover family. I will also search the deed records for land transfers in hoping to find the original Nofsker homestead. Rudolph Noff singer entered the New World in 1749 with Peter and Matthew (Mathias)noffsin ger aboard the ship We pay tribute to Glea Brown Richer, author of “ of the Nafzger Family in Aznerica”for her efforts in placing many descendants of Rudolph into family lines. There is considerable work to be done in order to complete her fine efforts and progress has been very slow. Thus, this issue of the Nafzger Heritage News will be directed to the problems that confront us in identifying many other descendants of the f am— ily line. The first problem confronting us is the location of the homestead of Rudolph. We know Peter Noffsinger lived in York County, Penn sylvania dnd Matthew(lTtathias) lived in Berks County, Pennsylvania but no documentation of the home of Rudolph as yet. We have turned up a clue that a Rudolph Naphzinger lived near Frederick, Maryland. He does not connect to Peter or Matthew(Mathias) families. Thus, we are seeking some rather conclusive evidence of the location of his home. Mrs. Richer did not list the name of his first wife. She indicated that the children were Peter, Samuel, Andrew, John, Catherine, and an unidentified son. There could have been more children. She further states that four of the sons, Peter, Samuel, Andrew, and John moved to Westmoreland County and Washing ton County, Pennsylvania and that is the be ginning of her research of the family line. Glea Brown Richer gives an excellent account of the migration trail of the four sons of Rudolph. We are indebted to the publication for the following account. JOHN NOFFSINGER was born about 1751 in Penn sylvania. He resided in Washington County, Pennsylvania from 1777 to 1801. His children were born in Pennsylvania and are Daniel, Judah, Lydia, John, Jr. ,Charles, Andrew, Sam uel, Susanna, Sarah, and Eli. The military records of Pennsylvania give the name of John Noffsinger, above, as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was a member of the Washington County “Militia” from 1777 to 1784. He was granted a survey of land, evi dently for military service, along Plum Run, near Ten Mile Creek in East Bethlehem Town ship, Washington County, and after adding to it by purchase, made it their home. This grant of land was called t3 his children grew to maturity, they estab lished homes near their father, and in some cases, they purchased tracts of land from their father, according to land records on file at Washington County. About 1800, John and his wife, with their married children, left Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio. They settled near Dayton, Montgomery County. He lived here, surrounded by his de RUDOLPH lands in America in 1749 Mrs. E. E. Cont’d from Page One - scendants, until his death in about 1825. His signature appears on a land transfer made in 1824 to one of his sons, as Johannes Noff— singer in an unsteady hand. He lies buried in the Noff singer cemetery near the church which his sons helped to found. His grave is marked by a boulder from the creek bed, near by the burial site. ANDREW NOFFSINGER was born in Pennsylvania, First name of his wife is Catherine and they were married in Pennsylvania. Children are Joseph, Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Catherine. The above couple emigrated to Montgomery County, Ohio in about 1802. In 1809, they sold their land in Montgomery County and moved to Miami County,Ohio, buying land of Peter Studebaker, also land and water rights for the erection of a mill from Jacob Boblet. The latter pur chase fell in Darke County when that county was separated from Miami. This old mill was situated near Weaver’s Station, in the vicinity of old Fort Jefferson, southwest of Greenville, Ohio. The name of PETER NOFFSINGER’s first wife is not known but children Elizabeth and Dan iel were born of the first marriage. After the death of his first wife, he was married in 1796 to Catherine Wise in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Judith and Mary were born of the second marriage. Catherine Wise, was the widow of Frederick Wise, founder of Frederick, Pennsylvania. Peter completed the work begun in the town of Frederick and was interested in its development. It is not definitely known whether he ever followed his relatives to Ohio or not. He is spoken of in the corres— ondence of his nephews as “Old Peter”. This seems to have been a term referring to his venerable age.Date of his death is not known. The first name of SAMUEL NOFFSINGER’s wife is Susan who he married in Pennsylvania. The names of children of this marriage are not known. He was married a second time in 1821 Cortt’d on Page Eight 1. I am writing to let you know that you are using the wrong middle initial for Jacob B. Noff singer. Also, you may not be aware that Harold B. Noffsinger of Naperville, Illinois died January 11, 1975. He was the last of the four brothers. The two sisters are still liv ing. I had a nice visit with them in October. MRS. STANLEY B NOFFSINGER, Akron, Ohio I was very pleased to receive so much infor mation on the Nofsker Family tree which you have collected. This has given me so much to work with and is giving me a wider range of information to use. Sarah Ann Nofsker on your chart is my great grandmother, which family 17 in the same form you used. I trust this in formation (even though it is not complete)will be of help and be added to your present mat erial. Enclosed is a donation for my subscription and for sending me the material. Through this interesting hobby which is growing on me, I have made new friends by letter and personally meeting them. Many of these relatives live in Blair County and at the present I am liv ing in the adjoining county. Since I have lived in Blair County most of my life, I am able to work closer this way with the infor mation. At the present, I have more information which I am working on but it is not all ready to be published or distributed. Whenever it is ready, I’ll be happy to send it along. AGNF.S I1AY 9orton, Illinois I can appreciate the dedication it takes to work on a project such as the Nafzger Herit eNows because I arr just beginning to work on my Noffsinger line. I wonder if you could put something in your next issue that would be helpful in my pursuit of the Noffsingers. Also would it be possible for me to receive hack copies of the News? I hope the informa tion is of some use to you. PATRICIA BROWN, Marietta, Ohio I would like to continue receiving the Nafz— ger Heritage News We received two copies the last two or three issues. Enclosed is a check for subscription and our correct address. ‘tRS. ORVILLE MILLER, East Peoria, Illinois I understand that we are related through Mary Noffsinger who married James McAllister. Mrs. Knauf has been helping me for about 4 years on my family history. She is remarkable and a very dear friend. I am enclosing a family chart which I hope will aid you. I hope to do some writing on this family in l975,and will keep you inform— ed as I collect information. Do you have any other Nofsker, Noffsinger, Naftzger information? Did these people come from Leyden,Holland with other dissenters, etc. Whatever you can tell me will be greatly ap preciated. I have never been to Marietta or Red Shoals. Also, do you know the towns in Green City, Pennsylvania where these people lived? Have you published any material? Do you know any more about the Lynn’s of Belmont County,Ohio. Lastly, did Mary have all nine children? We thought perhaps there was a second marriage. EILEEN HASTINGS DUNCAN, Hinsdale, Illinois Editor’s Note — Mrs. Duncan is a descendant of Mathias Noffsinger as is Mrs. Brown whose letter appears elsewhere in this issue of the News. She advised me to write to you. I have a Elizabeth Noff singer, born in 1819 in Montgomery County,Ohio married in 1837 to Amos Cook Sr. Elizabeth died in Darke County, Ohio in 1856. They wpre parents of six children. I had been hunting information on this Eliz beth Noffsinger for a number of years. Mrs. Quist wrote me and supplied n % some in formation on the Noffsinger family. According to her, Elizabeth Noffsinger is the daughter of Eli Noffsinger and Mary Pressel, the eld est of ten children. I will be glad to ex change, trade, or just send along any infor mation I have on these families,if you should want it. WILBUR LINDER, Portland, Indiana. Editor’s Note— We discovered that your family line needs some updating on our charts. It would appear your descendency is as follows: Rudolph(l), John(2), Eli(3), Elizabeth(Noff singer)Cook(4). We do not have a complete list of the Cook Children nor any of their descendants. Any help with updating this fam ily line will be greatly appreciated. I received your address from Mrs. Lyda Noft sger. My understanding is that you are work ing on the Noftsger family tree. I am inter ested in all available information that you have on the subject. I am interested in shar ing some of the expense of locating the nec— ssary information. I would like to settle the controversy of what nationality the Noftsger name is and the correct spelling of my fore fathers name. SN GARRI D NOFTSGER, San Francisco, California/ Editor’s Note — At first we thought we had the evidence to connect your line to Jacob who emigrated to America in 1750. Birthdates and names of several children found in an old family Bible owned by Willard Noftsger of Wilmington, Ohio was the evidence. More re cently, we have uncovered discrepancies which raise% some doubts unless Jacob was twice married and had two families. As yet, we have not found evidence to prove that he was twice married. Thus, the question is reopened. Thank you for your response to my inquiry in the last issue of the News. Since receiving the reply, I have done a little research in Frederick County, Maryland. Do you have the Neuschwanger deed records from Frederick County? If not, I will gladly send them to you. Those, with some records I have of Heidelberg Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania seem to link these two Pennsylvania and Maryland families together. MRS. DOLORES RUTHERFORD, Carmichael, Calif. I should not go beyond that, for we are retired and our plans are very indefinite. I have never had contact with my mother’s maternal side of the family. My grandfather, David Elijah Shafer, died in 1920 two months before my sister was born, and my mother was not able to make the trip to his funeral. He was the last of my mother’s im mediate family, so we have been cut off from the Naftzger side of the family all my life. When I worked at the Woman’s Division of Christian Service, The Methodist Church, New York City, 1945-1949, there was a Julia Parr Naftzger who was president of the North Central Jurisdiction WSCS. She was from Kokomo, md. I always wondered if she were a part of my fa ily circle, but our paths never crossed. I also have a C.E. Naftzger on my family list, but I’m sure you are not the one because the dates are not right. My sister lives in Seattle and there was a Charles Naftzger who lived at one time in Seattle, so I wonder if they are members of my family line. I have been attempting to trace Christian Hower through official chruch records. So far, I have found nothing. My mother was Fern Marie Shafer Thompson(mrs. Harry Russel Thompson) .She was the daughter of David Elijah Shafer and his wife,Mary Angeline Naftzger Shafer. Mrs. Shafer was the daughter of Joseph Naftzger and his wife, Amelia Hower Naftzger Bonewitz. Mrs. A. T. GOOLD, Northfield, Minnesota LETTER S I think there is no way to connect our family line to another family. T great grand-dau ghter had the material I first sent you and she insisted they had no Nafziger relative in the U.S. and has never heard her father talk about stories of crossing the ooean. I went to the courthouse and they have no rec ord of a Nafziger owning a place north of Met— amora. Christian, our great-grandfather bou ght a farm north of Washington, Illinois in 1863. That was at the time many Mennonites were moving from eastern states to Illinois. ROSE NOFSINGER, Eureka, Illinois. Editor’s Note — Thank you for making such a complete check on the issue. We are convinced and will be looking for your Christian in some of the eastern states or Canada. It helps to clarify one of the many Nafziger families that settle in Illinois. CONT”D on PAGE TWO to Hannah Ritter at Dayton, Ohio. Mary and Barbara were born of this marriage. Samuel move to Washington County, Pennsylvania in about 1780 from Westmoreland County, He bou ght land on “Casteel Run” in 1790,but sold it in 1807 and moved to Montgomery County, Ohio following John and his sons who had gone there in 1801. Samuel died before the marriage of his daughter, Mary, in 1842 as that marriage record gives”consent of bride’s mother” widow of Samuel Noffsinger, Sr. 7th Generation of Rudolph Noff Si nger I I Page Eight Vol. III, No. 3 THE NAFZGER HERITAGE NEWS JULY 1, 1975 4th. It listed his wife Fraults and daughter Frances and sons William and Wes ley in the probate court action. Also living in Nodaway County is Peter Noffsinger,Jr. who was born in Montgomery County, Ohio and marr ied in Nodaway County in 1853. We need to identify the complete family of Peter who lived in Westmoreland County, Penn sylvania and established the town of Freder ick, Pennsylvania and the children of the Peter who first made the westward migration to Nodaway County, Missouri to connect the following list of names as descendants to Rudolph Noffsinger. 7th. The marriage was witness by Sam uel, Mathias, Peter, and Catharina Naphzinger. Johannes and Anna Maria (Naphzinger) Newusch— wnager moved to Washington County,Pennsylvania which would have been the same migration trail used by Samuel and Peter Noffsinger who are sons of Rudolph. It is possible that the Mathias listed above may be the same one that corssed the frozen Ohio River in 1805 to settle in southeast Ohio(Belmont County. Thus, he may well be the name of the unidentified son of Rudolph cited in Mrs. Richer’s book. Also, based on the above clues it would appear that Rudolph lived near Frederick,Maryland and the name of his second wife is Susanna Kernin. We hope some of our readers living in the Freder ick, Maryland area will take some time to check courthouse records for births, marriages, deaths, and deeds to gain some documentation for our clues. __________________________________ SARAH NOFFSINGER JAMES NOFFSINGER MARY NOFFSINGER DAVID NOFFSINGER BETTY NOFFSINGER JOHN NOFFSINGER MATHIAS NOFFSINGER JANE NOFFSINGER KATHERINE NOFFSINGER EDWARD NOFFSINGER LUCINDA(NOFF5INGER) PATTERSC SARAH (NOFFSINGER)DEAL PHILENA(NOFFSINGER) NANCY (NOFFS INGER ) HUFF JOHN NOFFSINGER ELIZABETH (NOFFS INGER) M LYDIA NOFFSINGER MATTHAIS NOFFSINGER MARY (NOFFSINGER)MCALLISTER WILLIAM B NOFFSINGER 1 Page Ten _______________________________ I 5 I— , Vol. III, No. 3 THE NAFZ GER HERITAGE NEWS JULY 1, 1975 TER S LETTERS Thank you for copies of the Nafzger Heritage News. I have enjoyed them. Enclosed is in formation on my family line. I am sending money to help with past ex penses and for a future subscription to the News. KENNETH W NAFZIGER, Hopedale, Illinois Editor’s Note; Ken is a descendant of Christ ian W Nafziger who married Elizabeth Erismarin. Christian W is the son of Christian(1786—1819) and Elizabeth(Fisher)Nafziger. This appears to be a very substantial Nafziger line from the Hopedale area. We want to feature this line in some future issue of the News so we expect to be in touch with Ken to get some additional information for the feature story. It was nice to speak with you on the tele phone about Nafzger kin. In Woodford County, Illinois, I found nine ways of spelling Nafz ger in documents of record. I shall spell it as you do in your publication. My great grandmother Barbara (Nafziger) Gautsche was born in Madison Township, Butler County, Ohio. Her parents were Peter Nafzger and Elizabeth Nafzger (maiden name not known) Barbara Nafziger married Heinrich Gautsche in Butler County in 1853. Heinrich and Barbara Gautsche had ten children, including Magdalena (called Lena) ,who married grandfather Christ ian Garber. The Garvers had thirteen child ren, including my mother, Anna Matilda (Garber) Myers. Great grandmother Barbara (Nafziger)Gautsche must have lived in Butler County, Ohio until after their daughter Veronica(called Fannie) was born in 1873. The age of Fannie when they moved to Woodford County,Illinois isn’t known. The Gautsches(Barbara and Heinrich)lived on a farm she inherited from her father, Peter who died in 1882. In 1903, great grandmother purchased a house in Metamore, Illinois where she lived until her death in 1911. I’ll appreciate any information you can sup ply on said Peter Nafziger family. Also, do you know of anyone working on family lines of Myers, Garber, or Gautsche? ORVAL C. MYERS, Columbus, Ohio Editor’s Note — Can any of our readers help Mr. Myers with this family line? We have no information in the files on this Nafziger line. We hope descendants of this line will write the News. Enclosed is my check for subscription to the News. I enjoy it very much. My Gra RD, Christian Naffziger sailed from •ermany with his family in 1853. He settled near Danvers, Illinois and there is still a Naffziger liv ing on the home farm. It was so interesting to go through those two packets of information you Bent me at different times. I have spent quite a bit or time going through it. It is very interesting and informative. I must confess that it takes quite a while to really soak in or is it my age? I have a son—in—law who takes a lot, of interest and he has followed Borne of the in formation you sent much further than I was able. I am undertaking the task of bringing the data of my family line up-to-date. I have started to visit the various Nofziger homes who are not closely related with my immediate family. This is really opening up things that I never knew or realized how so many married quite close into their own family line. One thing that wouldn’t complicate things go much if there were fewer Peter’s, Joseph’s Jacob’s, Christian’s, John’s, Daniel’s and a few more Clair’s, Harley’s, Adams’s, etc. I will be looking forward to seeing you some time in the spring. HARLEY NOFZIGER, rchbold, Ohio I read with interest each issue of the News. It is my hope that you will be able to con tinue the excellent work which you have begun. Enclosed is my subscription along with the in formation sheet you requested in the January issue. With best regards. DONALD A NOFFSINGER, Anderson, Indiana. We received a nice letter from Robert E Nof singer of Wichlta,Kansas. The letter contained considerable valuable information on his family line. He is a descendant of Peter who landed in America in 17L Please find a check for my subscription. I was most pleased to receive a copy of the News as I was not aware of its existence. Naturally, I’d be interested in back issues when they are available. How interesting to read the features and letters from other gen ealogy buffs. I can’t help wondering if (with writer’s per mission) it would be possible to add the street address to the letters! My particular reason is a letter from Mrs. 3. F. White of Rochester, Minnesota statement that she has published a book. Sounds interesting. I would like to buy a copy. I’ve been wracking my brain to find something to contribute to your endeavor. I have a photo of Elizabeth Johnson Noffsinger (1818—1900) wife of Absolem Noffsinger(l813-l850).She was the mother of seven Noffsinger but the pic ture is with her second husband, Edward John son. There are other descendants in the Union City area. Do you have contact with them? Best wishes and good luck in your search. MARDELL EDWARDS, Saratoga, Indiana Editor’s Note — We have not been listing the street addresses because some of our readers may object; however, I am sure Mary White will be glad to provide our readers with informat ion as to procedure to follow for the pur chase of her book. She lives at 816 Memorial Parkway Drive in Rochester. I hope all of the Nafzgers receiving the News will realize that it needs support financially to grow larger and better. I would like to communicate with descendants of John Nafzger who moved to Stark County, Ohio in 1817. He is the son of Hen Nafzger who is the second son of Matthew Nafzger who landed in America in 1749. Recently, I became acquainted with Mr. C. J. Kurtz of Elverson,Pennsylvania who is on your mailing list. He is an Old Order Mennonite Minister and is interested in the Lancaster Mennonite Conference, Historical Society at 2215 Mill Stream Road, Lancaster. I believe this group has already requested to be put on your mailing list. Also, I have visited an Amish Minister who is seekihg information on the early Nafzgers in Pennsylvania. He also writes an Amish paper called “ Diary by Joseph Beiler, R#l, Box 245, Gordonville, Pennsylvania, 19529. FOSTER NAFTZINGER, Reading, Pennsylvania Thanks for all your effort in publishing the Nafzger Heritage News We do enjoy it. When our son came home from school and needed his family tree, the News really helped. MRS. ELDON DEAN NAFZIGER, Hopedale, Illinois One of the Bigelow cousins sent me the en closed cartoon, which really tickled our funny— bones, as it takes a gentle poke at the in flated egos of some genealogists. A second look, however, reveals that the G artist is somebody’s cousin(Nofziger)—any idea who he is? The cartoon came from Texas but I note a Los Angeles syndication. Best wishes, and I approve of your not print ing all of the letters; a few of the more in formative ones, yes——but not all. Save your space for tJie articles. I guess you know what ink and paper prices have jumped to. My own mimeographed family newsletter is fighting inflation too. While visiting in the home of Elbert Nof singer in Central City, Kentucky, I had the pleasure of reading the News featuring Peter who landed in America in 1749. I was really thrilled when I found the name of my Gr—Grand mother, Susan(Noffsinger)Stroud listed. Since her and Gr—Grandfather Zacheus Stroud’s child ren were shown in the 5th generation and Grand father Bradford Noffsinger Stroud’s children were shown in the 6th generation, I thought I would send a family group chart listing the children of my father, Eugene Stroud ai an addition to the 7th generation. Enclosed is donation and request to be added to your mail ing list. FINIS B STROUD, Owensboro, Kentucky - I am working on a complete genealogy of the MOSES ELI NAFZINGER family who is a descend ant of Peter Nafzinger, born 1790, Illbach. Germany and buried at Sea in l827.Also,I have considerable information on descendants of Lizzie and Fannie Nafzinger from “ Family History,l9ll’ Published by Mennonite Publish ing House, Scott Dale,Pennsylvania and “ Years Building on the Warwick”, 1947 by War wick River Mennonite Church,Denbigh, Virginia. I have zery little information on John Naf— zinger, a descendant* who moved to Kansas. I would like to hear from some of the des i cendants. Will send as soon as completed. .MQSES LEROY NAFZINGER, Fairfax Station, Va. I have enclosed a photostat of marriage rec ord of Mary Nofsinger and James McAllister. Since Mary Noffsinger married James in 1864, and Mrs. Duncan’s family says she died when a small child about five years old. I don’t see how she could have had all the children named unless some were twins. We don’t know anything about any of them except Hannah Gev rez. I thought likely James McAllister married again after her death as he didn’t die until 1917 in Indianapolis, and was written up as a Civil War veteran. I see by my old notes that James’s granddaughter said Mary Noffsinger was his first wife. Thanks for answering my letter and the data. O I a I I MRS. E. L. BIGELOW, Jonesville, Michigan. MRS.
