There are two spellings of the name and three different family lines involved in the tracing of the Nafzger heritage in Ful— ton county so we needed someone like Jesse to keep up straight. We have a nice letter from Blanche Heineken with consider able information on the family line of Peter Noffsinger of Eff— ingham, Kansas. She is a great help to the News for her effort In contacting the various living descendants of this line for a good update of the records on the later generations. We apprec— late the help. S We have received ten pages of material from Hazel Quist of Myrtle Point, Oregon for a. update of records on her family line. The material relates to the descet1m of Susanah Noff singer (1832—1913) who married John Root in 1849 in Randolph County, Indiana. To this union were born nine childre seven boys and two girls. Many thanks for the Material. Johannes Nofziger emigrated to the United States in 1847 from Alsace Lorainne near Metz, Germany. Johannes hails from the same general area of Germany and set tled in Fulton County, Ohio following the same pattern as did Valentine ‘afziger who was featured in the last issue of the News. Thus, it can be assumed that there was some kind of relationship between the two although it remains to be determined. A third family, Christian Nafziger, settled first in Wayne County and his descend ants very quickly proceeded to move to Fulton County following the same migration trail as Valentine. Thus, descendants of three Nafzi families are found in Fulton County, Ohio at the same time. Johannes Nofziger was married to Mary Wyse in German\. He brought his family of two sons and six daughters to the United States ranging in age from twenty year old Christian to Susan who must have been the youngest. They settled on a farm just west of Pettsville, Ohio. The Lake Shore and Michigan South ern Railroad cut a wedge off the north end of the farm and the road crossed the railroad at an angle which was to become known as the slanting crosslng”.Thus, Johannes picked up the nickname as Rail road John” to distinguish him from John Nafzigers found in the other two Nafzigers families living in the same area. At least one of John’s son, Christian, became known as “Raiirosd Chris’ for the same reason as his father picked up the nickname. ‘Railroad Chris’ was horn in Alsace Loraine near Metz, Germany in 1827. He was married to Eliza beth Gingrich and they became the parents of John, Jonathan, Jeffer son, and Elizabeth. After the death of Elizabeth, he was married to Magdalena Yoder in 1861. Child ren of the second marriage are Christian, Jefferson, Anna, Mary, Daniel, Jacob, Leah, Sarah, and Catherine. Johannes second son was named John who was born in 1830 in Germany. He was married in 1855 to Magdalena King. For reasons not yet clear. John moved to Wayne Count Ohio just about the time that descend ants of the other two families were moving to Fulton County. Ohio. Thus, we have Nafzgers families meeting each other traveling across northern Ohio——it must relate to the Mennonite movement in this country for John did not remain in Wayne County for long. In 1869. he migrated to Wheatland, Missouri which probably related to a gen eral move of the Mennonites in the United States. His first wife died in 1880 and he married again Continued on Page Nine -- - WRITE US WE LIKE TO HE AR FROM YOU We welcome letters and will publish as many as we can find the space. It is impossible to print all the material contributed but records of the material will be maintained for future generations. The donations are used to cover printing and mailing costs. Increased postage costs and a slight drop in the donations caused some op erating losses last issue. Presently, the newsletter is being sent to 2,000 Nafzgers through out the United States. Let us involve more Nafzgers and keep the donation plan working - Thanks. Columbus, Ohio Page Six We have a letter from Mrs. Awyn Schuit of Sun City, Ficrida indicating that some of the information in Vol II, No. 1, of the News may not be correct, We connected the family line of Peter Noffsinger(1833— of Effingham, Kansas to the Perer Nosker’s line who entered the U.S. in 1749 with only a thread of evidence and with tongue—in—cheek’ hoping that some of the descendants would help us with the documentation of the facts. Mrs. Schultze’s evidence is convincing enough to publish the list of descendants of this line again to establish that they may be from the family line of Rudolph Noffsinger who entered the U.S. in 1749 and not from Peter as indicated in Vol II, No. 1 of the News It would appear that two Noffsinger lines emigrated across Missouri about the same time. John Shaver Noffsinger and David C Noffsinger. brothers .nd born in Botetourt County, Virginia, emigrated to Missouri about the same time as Peter Noffs Sr. went to Nodaway County, Missouri. Our error in judgement was in assum ing the three were brothers. Children of the first marriage are Daniel, Catherine, Nary, Lee, Susanna, and John, Jr., while Mattie, Sarah, Anna, Ida. and Minnie are children of the second marriage. John • was the father of fourteen children. A third marriage was to Mary Diener during the later years of his life. Johanrtes’s oldest daughter was Katherine who married Peter Beck. Children are Jahn, Simon, Levi, Eli, Mary, Emma, Eliza, Daniel and all resided in Fulton County. Another daughter, 4ary, married Christian Wyse and be came the parents of Amos, Seth, Joel, Barbara, Nary, and Lena. The family resided in Fulton County, Ohio. Barbara, another daughter, married David Nofziger who was a grandson of Valentine. They became the parents of Levi, Jacob, SdmlIel, Mary, Elizabeth, Katherine, Emma, and Sarah. Daughter Anna married Gotlieb Beck and they became the parents of Jonathan, John, Jael, Samuel, Christian, Jacob, Henry, Mary, Ann, Katherine, Martha and Barbara. Like t other daughters they resided in Fulton County. Magdalena married Jacob Sommers and they became the parents of Samuel, David, John, Levi, and Mary. The family migrated to Arkansas and finally settled in Oklahoma. Susan, the youngest daughter, married Jacob Yoder. They adopted a child, Rudy gutter, and they had a daughter who died young. The \‘oder family moved to Missouri, later to Arkansas and still later, to Pryor, Oklahoma. Johanne’s descendants widely used two different spellings of the name, Nofziger and Nafziger. His old est eon, Christian adopted the Nofziger spelling while his second son, John used the Nafziger spelling when he moved westward. A daughter married a Nofziger who had adopted this spelling from Valentine’s line.
